Alvarez Comments on FY 2015 Budget Vote

June 9, 2014

SAN DIEGO (June 9, 2014) – Councilmember Alvarez has issued the following statement in response to his vote today on the FY2015 Budget:

This budget does not serve ALL neighborhoods in San Diego- it serves SOME.
I cannot support a budget that does not provide equal resources to my constituents, which is why I cast a NO vote today.

I’ve made it very clear that there are long delayed projects in my district that would have been able to be built this year if the needed funding was provided.  There is a shovel-ready 15+ acre park project in Ocean View Hills- Pacific Breezes Community Park- that I believe could have been funded in this budget to address the park deficit in this community.

While there are many things in this budget worth supporting- from increased library services to police and fire training academies- I cannot in good conscience watch our incoming revenues increase and then turn around and tell the constituents of District 8 that there just isn’t any money available for projects in their neighborhood in a $1.2 BILLION dollar budget.  The neighborhoods that I represent are receiving less than 2% of the City’s CIP budget.
